Problem

There are many methods of brewing coffee when camping, as well as keeping coffee hot, but there are not many methods of carrying one's grounds or beans to the campsite.

Campers are often left putting their coffee into Ziploc bags, delicate Mason jars, and heavy canisters.

Audience

The Java Jar is for the experienced camper who enjoys the morning coffee ritual. The consumer will already be invested in brewing coffee while camping, possibly with their own hand grinder for bringing beans on trips.

Research and Inspiration

Research looked at popular camping products and existing coffee tools, including the Jetboil camping stove, possible ways to brew coffee while camping, coffee grinders made for the camping market, and Talenti jars that campers already use for cold soak cooking.

Sketches

Sketches explored the container form, cap layout, storage compartments, measuring cup, and integrated stir holder.

Materials

The main body of the container will use a recyclable and durable plastic. ABS will be used for the lids and the measuring cap.

Aluminum will be used for the stirrer because it will be exposed to heat in the mixing process.

Features

The large threaded mouth allows for easier cleaning and filling. Beans or grounds could be poured straight in from their bag.

Two covers allow for pouring both sugar and powdered creamer. A latch secures both lids for travel.

The cap for the coffee compartment doubles as a measuring cup for one cup of coffee, about one tablespoon. The side has an open channel for holding a stirrer that can be used for brewing or for mixing in sugar and creamer.
