Brief

The task was to create a complete winter hammock camping system. The complete system needed to include a rain tarp, over-quilt, hammock, under-quilt, and bug net.

The goal was to make the system fully modular so not every piece had to be used to keep it functional.

Hammock Camping

Hammock camping can be an enriching experience. In temperate climates, hammock camping can be cheaper, lighter weight, and require less gear.

In warmer temperatures, the only extra gear recommended besides a hammock is a bug net and a rain tarp for precipitation and morning condensation.

Winter Camping

Camping in the winter can be fun but challenging, and bringing the proper gear is important. Besides packing extra layers to wear during the day, it is important to pack the proper layers for sleeping.

When camping in temperatures below 60 degrees, an under-quilt is recommended. For colder conditions, an over-quilt can be used with the sleeping bag.

Sketches

Sketching focused on the modular interactions between the hammock and the surrounding layers. A unique system for attaching the under-quilt to the hammock was selected.

The bug net solution was designed to be lightweight and easy to open. Final selected design elements were combined into one system, including straps similar to belt loops for securing the under-quilt.

Rain Tarp

The rain tarp protects the hammock system from precipitation and morning condensation. It can be used as part of the complete system or on its own when weather protection is needed.

Bug Net

The bug net provides insect protection for warmer conditions. The selected solution focused on staying lightweight while remaining easy to open.

Over-Quilt

The over-quilt adds top insulation for colder camping conditions and can be combined with a sleeping bag as part of the winter setup.

Hammock

The hammock is the core of the modular system. It works with the surrounding layers but remains functional when only the necessary components are used.

Belt-loop-like straps help secure the under-quilt to the hammock.

Under-Quilt

The under-quilt provides bottom insulation for temperatures below 60 degrees. Its attachment method was a key design focus so the system could remain modular and secure.

Accessories

Accessories included examples of compression sacks for carrying and packing the modular hammock system.
